Joost van den Bergh is delighted to return to Frieze Masters this year with a presentation devoted to twentieth-century Japanese art.

Bringing together painting, sculpture, lacquer, ceramics and bamboo, our selection reflects the breadth and diversity of Japanese artistic practice.

Highlights include works by members of the Gutai Art Association, one of Japan’s most significant post-war artistic movements, founded in 1954 under the leadership of Jirō Yoshihara (1905–1972).

Works on paper by founding member Kazuo Shiraga (1924–2008) will be presented alongside two paintings by Atsuko Tanaka (1932–2005), one of the movement’s most influential female artists. Several paintings from the Abacus series by fellow founding member Yoshio Sekine (1922–1989) will also be on view.

A further highlight is an exceptional painting by Onosato Toshinobu (1912–1986), exhibited and published in Germany in 1973. The presentation also offers an opportunity to discover works by two artists whose practices remain less widely known outside Japan: Zenzo Sakamoto (1911–1987) and Nambata Fumio (1941–1974).

We look forward to welcoming you to Stand B03.
