Kunishima’s sculptures frequently incorporate contrasting materials and surfaces, including aluminium, natural stone and bronze. His Soso (Layered) series consists of multiple layers of aluminium, incorporating stones and other materials, while his Wrapped Memory series uses resin and lead to enclose familiar objects such as books, pencils, paint and clocks. His works often consist of modular elements, allowing the relationship between form and the surrounding space to change.
Kunishima held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and the United States from 1963 onwards, including at Sakura Gallery, Nagoya; Space, Los Angeles; and UCSB Art Museum, Santa Barbara. His work was included in the Contemporary Art Exhibition of Japan at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum and Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, and in KATACHI: Form and Spirit in Japanese Art at the Albuquerque Museum. His sculptures are held in the collections of the Okazaki City Museum of Art and the Fujii Tatsukichi Museum of Contemporary Art, Hekinan, and he has produced numerous public sculptures in Japan and abroad.
